The system was made more efficient by installing VFDs on 1,000 kW motors aboard cargo ships. To prevent high starting currents, the soft-starter system was converted into a VFD-based system. Starting currents of 5,000 amperes were reduced to approximately 800 amperes, delivering improved energy efficiency.
